South Australian barley grower orders another round of R.U.M.The Yorke Peninsula in South Australia is one of the nation's prime barley producing areas and this season, on their 960 acre family property 'Gwendon' near Ardrossan, Barry and Dee Lutze conducted trials using Beaulieu R.U.M. on some 'Galleon' barley. Sown into last season's stubble, this is the fourth successive year that the paddock has been cropped. The photograph show the clear difference in the trial. On the left, Barry applied 3L R.U.M./ha with 80kg of pre-drilled urea one week prior to sowing. This was followed up with 2L R.U.M./ha at tillering. So super was used. A trial on the right of the photo was sown with 80kg/ha urea plus 50kg/ha Zinc coated super. The weigh bins told the story with the R.U.M.-treated trial increasing Barry's yield by nearly 3 bags/acre. A trial on a crop of Dunne peas showed a similar yield increase. All of which left Barry ordering another round of R.U.M.
W.A. squash champion turns to R.U.M.From the West, R.U.M. distributor Alan Hardman sends us the story of Harry Van Der Gugten. Harry keeps a meticulous diary of all that happens on his high-yielding 12 acre market garden at Oakford, near Perth. And it makes fascinating reading... "Squash That's a 200% increase, Harry! What are you doing? "Well", says Harry, "about every four weeks I put about 8L/ha R.U.M. through my boom spray, occasionally adding a fungicide." "You see, the squash leaves are so large that they create a lot of humidity which is perfect for powdery mildew." "This time of the year the whole crop can turn white... and our picking is over. I put 1L R.U.M. in 100L water for better coverage", Harry goes on, "but I only use the fungicide three times because the R.U.M. seems to prevent the mildew." Harry also got big results from using R.U.M. on his capsicums, carrots and swedes. After 40-odd years in the gardening game, Harry reckons he's found the ideal tonic for his W.A. market garden!
N.Z. Loves Aussie R.U.M.
An independent irrigated pasture trial on NZ's South Island, has put R.U.M. on the map. Different nitrogenous fertilisers were applied to 3 x 1ha pasture blocks, leaving a fourth 1ha block untouched as a control.
The trial was replicated on another 4 blocks, making a total of 8 x 1ha. Dry matter increase (kg/ha/day) was measured at 14, 26, 36 and 46 day intervals. After each measurement, 400 diary cows were grazed over the trial pastures for 2 days and then removed. As the chart (below) shows, on all occasions the R.U.M.-treated regrowth greatly exceeded that of the other blocks. |
